The 60-30-10 rule

Color proportions: 60% base, 30% secondary, 10% accents.

The rule splits color 60% dominant base (walls, floor), 30% secondary (curtains, rug), 10% accents (pillows, art). Put the replaceable things in the 10% — swap terracotta for deep green in two years and the interior refreshes without renovation. In monochrome schemes apply it to textures instead.
