Concealed cistern frame

A concealed cistern frame (in-wall WC carrier) is a steel mounting frame with a built-in cistern that is hidden in a wall or false wall and carries a wall-hung toilet. Only the bowl and flush plate stay visible. The floor under the toilet is clear, so cleaning takes seconds and the bathroom looks lighter and more minimalist. The cistern is hidden, so flushing is usually quieter.
How it is built. The frame is fixed to the structural wall and floor (sometimes only to the wall, depending on the type) and is height-adjustable. According to catalogues, the frame height of different models can be adjusted roughly between 100 and 140 cm and the depth ranges from 12 to 27 cm; check exact dimensions in the datasheet of the chosen model. Inside are the cistern, flush mechanism, water and drain connections, and the bowl fixings come out at the front. The frame is clad with moisture-resistant plasterboard or built into a niche, then tiled.
Load. For wall-hung toilets many manufacturers state a frame load of 400 kg (confirmed in product listings of different brands). Check the load for your specific model and fix it as the instructions require. The main mistake is fixing the frame to a weak base such as a thin block wall without reinforcement.
Depth and space. The depth of the frame together with cladding and tile takes from several to a few tens of centimetres in the bathroom. In small bathrooms this must be counted in advance and taken into account when choosing a false wall. If a false wall across the full width is not needed, choose models with less depth or build the frame into a niche of an existing partition.
Servicing. A common fear is "what if it breaks?". In practice the serviceable parts of the cistern (flush mechanism, float valve) are taken out through the opening under the flush plate, and the wall does not need to be broken. So choose frames from established brands (for example Geberit, Grohe, TECE) and make sure parts are available. Choose the plate to suit the opening size. Provide access to the stop valve near the frame.
Typical mistakes: installing a cheap frame from an unknown maker with no spares; forgetting sound insulation of the cistern and joints; setting the bowl at the wrong height so it is uncomfortable to sit; not reinforcing the wall for the frame; cladding the frame without access to the stop valve. In the working project we show the frame on the plumbing fixtures plan and the bathroom elevations, so the contractor knows the niche size, height and flush plate position.
